Transfer Varian Data from NMRnet

Transferring data from the Varian server:

(These instructions are for Varian data only. If you are looking for data from the Automated Brukers, click here.)

To transfer data from the server remotely you will need a secure FTP client on your computer. Regular FTP will not work, you must use SFTP, or the server will refuse to talk to you. We  recommend FileZilla for this purpose, but all other SFTP clients will work, as well. When downloading FileZilla, use the installers from http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?show_all=1 because the installer linked from the homepage may include bundled software, which you can decline during the installation.

Setting up FileZilla:

  1. Download and install FileZilla from http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?show_all=1
  2. Run FileZilla
  3. Click the computer icon on the graphical menu bar to open “Site Manager”
  4. Click the “New Site” button
  5. Enter a name (e.g. nmrnet) for the Site Manager entry
  6. Set Host: nmrnet.chem.cornell.edu
  7. Port: leave blank
  8. Server Type: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol
  9. Logon Type: For PRIVATE computers select “Normal” or “Ask for password”
  10. User: Enter your NMR username (not your Cornell NetID)
  11. Password: For “Normal” logon type enter your NMR workstation password (not your scheduler password or your Cornell NetID password)
  12. Logon Type: For SHARED computers select “Interactive”. User and password will be grayed out.
  13. Click the “Advanced” tab
  14. Default local directory: Browse to the folder on your computer where you want to store your NMR data
  15. Default local directory: Browse to the folder on your computer where you want to store your NMR data
  16. Default remote directory: /data/username where username is your NMR username (not your NetID) for private computers. Use /data for shared computers.
  17. Click OK

Using FileZilla

  1. Connect to the Cornell VPN, even on Eduroam or Red Rover
  2. Start FileZilla
  3. Click the “Site Manager” icon and double click on the entry your just created or highlight the entry and click “Connect”
    OR
click the black arrow next to the computer icon and select the entry from the drop-down list
  4. If you set your logon type to “normal” you should get logged on automatically. If you selected “Ask for password” or “Interactive” you will be prompted for your username and/or password. Be sure to use the workstation password (not the scheduler or NetID passwords).
  5. The right side of the display is the remote directory; the left side is your local folder. To transfer files, simply drag and drop.

Common Problems/Questions:

Can’t connect to the server?

  • Make sure you are connected to the Cornell VPN
  • Make sure you are using the correct username and/or password.
  • If you are using a firewall make sure FileZilla has access to the network
  • Double check that you selected SFTP as the server type

Can’t see your files?

  • Make sure that the “Remote Site” field says “/export/data/your_username”. If it doesn’t, you can enter it from the keyboard but check “Default remote directory” in the “Advanced” tab of the site manager.
  • By default, Windows puts files before directories in alphanumeric lists and Varian stores data as directories with .fid extension. You will have to scroll down past all the files to see your data.
